Industrial Sewing Machine Needle Guide: Which Needle Fits Your Machine?

Every industrial sewing machine takes one specific needle system. A needle from the wrong system may not fit, or will skip stitches and break thread. Choosing a needle means picking two things: the system (which depends on your machine) and the size (which depends on your fabric and thread).

1. Needle system by machine

Not sure what your machine uses? The needle system is printed on the needle packet, and it is listed in your machine’s instruction manual or part book.

2. Needle size by fabric

Needles are sized in two numbering systems: the Singer size (9, 11, 14…) and the metric size (65, 75, 90…). A packet marked “14/90” is the same needle in both systems. Use a thicker needle for thicker fabric and thread.

3. When to change the needle

  • Skipped stitches, thread breaking or fraying, or a clicking sound as the needle enters the fabric.
  • Pulled threads or small holes in the fabric (a blunt or bent needle).
  • After the needle hits a pin or the needle plate, even if it looks fine.
  • In production, many workshops simply change needles at the start of every shift.
